Digital Artifacts – The Colour Gremlins | From Luminous Landscape

From time to time, the technology of digital cameras can introduce unwanted artifacts. One type of artifact that you can fix with Photoshop is an excessive amount of colour noise or colour blooming. You’ll most likely see this problem when shooting with a high ISO setting or with a low-end digital camera (cell phone cameras). The added colour artifacting doesn’t represent the true colour of an image. I call this phenomenon “The Colour Gremlins”.

Many photographers new to the concepts of digital image processing, when they encounter the phrase bit depth — their eyes glaze over. They know that it has something to do with image quality, and that more bits are somehow better, but that's about it. Let's look at this relatively simple but often misunderstood topic and see if we can make sense of it.
