Nikon Pocket Rocket J1

Rating:
In the mirrorless camera market Nikon has chosen to go down a different road and not reinvent the wheel but to redesign from the ground up. The result is a near pocket size mirrorless camera with a solid build and a handful of lens choices such as 30-110 mm, and 10 mm F2.8. The CX-CMOS sensor is smaller than the competition and sits at 10 megapixels and has a 2.7X crop factor. Don't be fooled by the low megapixel count because lots of megapixels doesn't always equate to lots of image quality.
This little pocket rocket is generally on par with the competition in the speed department with the capability to take 60 fps burst at max. resolution (12 shots max). It provides above average image quality and is bundled with the very excellent 10-30 mm. VR. I purchased the dual lens bundle which included both the 10-30 mm. and the supporting zoom lens taking it from 30 to 110 mm. I'm very happy with the quality of the optics in the bundled lenses. As usual this shouldn't surprise many since Nikon quality is prevalent throughout this camera and the accompanying lenses.
The J1 is available in some pretty cool colours, such as red, striking white, the usual black and the elegant silver. I chose the silver model.
HD video at 1080P is excellent and it also sports a cute pop up flash with a periscope-like design reminiscent of the trash compactor monster from Star Wars.
In terms of real world image quality, it’s not up to full fledged DSLR standards but it does a pretty decent job for a first crack at the mirrorless camera market and I know I’m going to enjoy using this camera for years to come and may even hold on to it as a collectors item after that.
Highly recommended
